Projects

RouterTech
March 2006 ­ Present
Founded and continue to play a key role in the running of a group creating and maintaining free and open source Linux based firmware for commercial networking products. The group has grown rapidly since its creation and currently has a contract with a router manufacturer to have its firmware loaded on to a range of products from factory.

Programming

My current course of study affords me a large amount of exposure to and experience in a variety of programming and mark­up languages, as do my own personal projects most of which centre around software development of some description.

I have a high level of experience with Java, C#, Python, C, C++, PHP, Bash, HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and SQL. My experience in programming allows me to learn new languages quickly by building on core concepts. It also allows me to quickly automate routine computing tasks by developing a software solution which allows me to increase my productivity.

Research Assistant, Leeds University School of Computing

Processing and analysing images from an Earth Sciences experiment into the behaviour of volcanoes and earthquakes, making use of a variety of computer vision techniques including stereo calibrated cameras to build up a three dimensional model of the location of markers used to record results during the experiment such that they might more readily be analysed.

May 2007 – Sept 2007
Worked for a privately run company developing specialised software for use in NHS pathology labs around the country. Work involved business analysis, agile modelling, software development and interaction with the potential user base in the form of site visits. I gained experience in a wide range of Microsoft technologies in the course of my work with the company included Microsoft BizTalk Server, MS SQL Server and the Microsoft .NET architecture. The position allowed me to become familiar with business processes within the NHS and NHS specific technologies such as N3 and the HL7 messaging structure.

Successfully launched and continue to run a small web development company specialising in hosting, design, development, administration and backup solutions. This has enabled me to gain a deep understanding of how a business is run and the importance of deadlines and time management.

Undergraduate Demonstrator, Leeds University School of Computing
Sept 2006 – July 2007
Work involved assisting first year computing students with their introduction to programming module. Specifically this involved troubleshooting problematic code and helping students gain an understanding of basic programming concepts by talking them through their mistakes and pointing out possible improvements. This required a high level of interpersonal skills and patience.

Tribunal Clerk at Employment Tribunal Service (ETS), Watford, Hertfordshire
July 2006 – Sept 2006
Responsible for clerking a number of Employment Tribunals that were in session during the course of my employment. In addition to such hands on work, I performed a wide range of administration duties ranging from taking queries by telephone to processing claims and responses to them. All of these tasks required good time management and team work skills to ensure jobs were completed to a high standard and on time. This position also afforded me the opportunity to make myself acquainted with some of the basics of employment law.

Dec 2005
Work involved sorting, fetching and carrying mail. Speed and efficiency were a requirement of the job to make sure mail was delivered on time over the busy festive period.

Responsible for showing prospective students and their parents around the university departments and accommodation, with particular emphasis on the physics department. This involved careful planning and good communication to make sure the tours were coherent and well structured.

Work experience placement for 1 week; Working with opto­electronic safety devices for use with factory machinery. Gained hands on experience testing and repairing devices, as well as interpersonal skills from working with others on larger jobs. The work provided me with an insight into dealing with customers on site by accompanying field engineers on their visits.

Sport
Regular participant in a wide range of sports including pool, swimming and tennis. I also sail and play golf during vacation periods.

Music
Keen interest in jazz music, and used to present a weekly jazz and blues radio show on University Radio York which boasted large numbers of listeners.
