They rejected the offer to get cheap publicity for the newly formed (June 1) University and College Union:

'University and College Union launches 1 June

The new University and College Union has today been created by the amalgamation of the Association of University Teachers and NATFHE - The University & College Lecturers' Union.

The new union represents almost 120,000 staff working in further and higher education and is the UK's largest and most effective voice in post-school education.

Built on the shared experience and expertise of the two strong unions - AUT and NATFHE - the newly created UCU brings together academics, lecturers, trainers, instructors, researchers, administrators, managers, computer staff, librarians and postgraduates from universities, colleges, prisons adult education and training organisations.'

Now with greater bargaining power, the reformed Union will hold out for an even greater length of time. Don't hold your breath on this one before a conclusion is reached (unless your David Blaine).
